Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls – Where the smoke thunders

When the well-fed Zambezi River feeds into Victoria Falls, the water plunges into the depths with thunderous force. It’s a spectacle best experienced while wearing a rain cape.

Long before Africa’s most famous waterfalls come into view, we hear and feel them. A loud rumbling can be heard, which grows louder and louder as we get closer. Mist then rises, and water droplets splash against our faces. Although it isn’t raining, the air is thick with moisture.

Victoria Falls: Livingstone and the Zambezi

In 1851, explorer David Livingstone followed the Makolo people along the Zambezi River to the gigantic waterfalls. He then named them “Victoria Falls” in honor of the Queen. They have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989. We take it in stride that the mist wets us as we hike along the falls. After all, it’s also responsible for the rainforest surrounding us. This rainforest is home to an incredible array of flora and fauna and provides a charming backdrop along the river’s course. The widest waterfall on Earth measures 1,708 meters and plunges 110 meters down into the narrow gorge.

Rafting below the falls

From above, there are always new views of the canyon. The most famous photo subject is undoubtedly the ever-present rainbow arching over the churning waters. If, despite its fascination, the view isn’t thrilling enough for you, you can take on Class 5 rapids on a rafting trip below the falls. It’s an adventure I also dared to undertake during one of my last visits here. “Did you do a flip?” is a question I’m asked regularly when people find out I went on that adrenaline-fueled rafting trip. “Me? No way!” I reply with a grin. And sure enough, my girlfriend and I were the only ones back then who didn’t take a “plunge” into the water.

Today, though, we’re content to take an early morning stroll through the jungle along the falls—before the crowds of tourists arrive. There, we simply enjoy this special place and let it work its magic on us.
